Senator Clinton Joins Law Enforcement in Opposition to “Gun Immunity” Bill
Washington, DC – Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (NY) today joined with law enforcement officers from across the country and the Brady campaign in calling on the Senate to reject the so-called "gun immunity" bill. "Gun owners are asked to act responsibly and the vast majority of them do. Gun makers and gun sellers should be held to the same standard," Senator Clinton said.
Senator Clinton pointed out that no other industry enjoys the kind of protection that this bill would provide to the gun industry. Even companies such as Bull's Eye Shooter Supply, which armed the D.C. snipers, would not be immune from any accountability for its actions.
"This is not about being for or against responsible gun ownership; it's about simple fairness and justice. I simply cannot understand why the Congress would give this extraordinary and unprecedented liability protection to the gun industry," Senator Clinton said.
Today, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined with several other big city mayors in writing an op-ed on this topic for the New York Times. The Mayors pointed to federal data showing that a little more than one percent of the gun dealers account for 57 percent of guns recovered in criminal investigations.
Senator Clinton opposes this bill because it would send a message to a handful of gun dealers that they are completely immune from any responsibility. "Enough is enough. We need to serve the interests of the American people first. We should be passing legislation to make our streets safer, not to protect and absolve the gun industry."
